Functions of Commerce

Good morning boys! Let us now start with our second part of Business Activities which is Commerce.
Learning outcomes- At the end of the topic, students will be able to-
1) Explain the functions or role of Commerce.
2) State the meaning of Commerce.
Q.12 Explain the role/ functions of Commerce. (6)
Ans All activities related to buying and selling or providing services to facilitate buying and selling are part of Commerce. It acts as a link between producers and consumers to ensure efficient distribution of goods. They help to maintain free and smooth flow of goods and services by removing various hindrances related to people, place, time, risk, finance and information which are explained as follows-
1. Removing the hindrance of people-
a) Commerce removes the hindrance of people with the help of traders who removes the gap between production and consumption and helps in the distribution of goods.
2. Removing the hindrance of place-
a) Commerce removes the hindrance of place by transportation.
b) There are various modes of transport like rail, road, water and air which help in the smooth flow of goods and services between producers and consumers.
3. Removing the hindrance of time-
a) Commerce removes the hindrance of time by Warehousing.
b) Warehouses store the goods till the time they are demanded by the consumers and creates time utility.
4. Removing the hindrance of risk-
a) Commerce removes the hindrance of risk by Insurance.
b) Insurance is a contract between Insurer and Insured whereby the insurer promises to indemnify the insured in the event of loss in return of some fee known as premium.
5. Removing the hindrance of finance-
a) Banks removes the hindrance of finance.
b) There are various functions of banks like accepting deposits, lending funds, remittance of funds and other allied services.
6. Removing the hindrance of information-
a) Advertisements removes the hindrance of knowledge or information.
b) Advertisement is a paid form of communication used by an identified sponsor to convince the buyer to buy the products.
