LEARNING OUTCOMES- At the end of the topic, students will be able to-
a) State the meaning of cooperative society.
b) Explain the features of cooperative society.

Ques 18  What is a cooperative society ? Explain the features of a cooperative society. (6)
Ans- The co-operative society is a voluntary association of persons who join together to work for a common purpose, with the motive of welfare of the members. For example- Mother Dairy, Amul, etc.
The features of cooperative society are as follows:
1. Formation-
a)It can be formed with a minimum of 10 individuals and they must be registered under the
Cooperative Societies Act, 1912 which provides a distinctive legal identity to the society . 
b)The capital is raised amongst the members through the issue of shares.
2. Voluntary Membership-
a) The membership of a cooperative society is voluntary. Any person who is above 18 years of age and has a common interest can become a member.
b) All individuals irrespective of the gender, caste or religion can become members of a cooperative society. Individuals are free to join or leave the society after serving a short notice in this regard.
3. Legal status-
a) Registration under Cooperative Societies Act gives an identity separate from its members .
b) The society can enter into contracts, purchase property in its own name, file case against others , etc. The society is not affected by the entry or exit of its members because of its separate legal entity.
4. Limited Liability-
a) The members of a cooperative society enjoy limited liability .
b) Maximum liability of each member is the amount of capital contributed by them in the form of share capital.
5. Control -
a) Cooperative society are run in a democratic manner , the affairs are managed by the elected
managing committee through one man one vote.
b) All the decisions are taken by the managing committee in consultation with all the members of the society.
6. Service motive -
a) The cooperative society works with the main motive of mutual help.
b) Any surplus if earned while carrying society work is distributed among the members of the society as per the bye laws of the society.
