Q.23 What is meant by public relations? What is the importance of Public Relations ? (5)
Ans- Public Relations involves a variety of programmes designed to promote or protect a company image and its individual products in the eyes of the public. For example -Sponsoring sports and cultural events ,contributing money and time to certain causes like environment, wildlife, children rights, education, etc .
They are especially useful when there is negative publicity about the company or its products to ensure that negative publicity does not take place at all. The main task is to disseminate information and build goodwill about the business.
It can be performed by :
1) The marketing department.
2) A seperate department to manage public relations known as Public Relations Department.

Importance of Public Relations are as follows:
1. Building Awareness-
a)Public Relations department can take stories and dramatise the product in the media.
b) This will build excitement before the product reaches the market or media advertising takes place. This usually creates a favourable impression on the target customer.
2. Building Credibility -
a) If news about a product comes in the media whether print or in electronic form, it builds credibility and the people believe in the product since it is in the news.
3.Stimulates Salesforce -
a) It becomes easier for the salesforce to deal with the retailers and convince dealers if they have already heard about the product in the news before it is launched.
b) Retailers and dealers also feel it is easier to sell the product to consumers.
4. Lowers Promotion Costs-
a) Maintaining good public relations costs much less than advertising.
b) However, it requires a lot of communication and interpersonal skills to convince the media to give space or time for the organisation and its product.

Ans- 1. Press Relations-
a) The public relations department is in contact with the media to present true facts and a correct picture about the company. Otherwise, news can be distorted if taken from other sources.
2. Product Publicity-
a) The public relations department advices the top management that the company can draw attention to the new products by sponsoring sports and cultural events like news conferences, seminars and exhibitions.
3. Corporate Communication-
a) The company image can be promoted through communication with the public and the employees within the organisation.
b) This is done with the help of newsletter, annual reports, brochures, speeches by companies executives at a meeting or trade fairs, interviews with TV channels, etc.
4.Lobbying-
a) Public relations professionals help the company to maintain a healthy relationship with the government officials and ministers in charge of the corporate affairs ,industry, finance with respect to policies related to business and economy.
5. Counselling-
a) The public Relations department advices the top management that the company can build goodwill by contributing money and time to certain causes like environment ,wildlife, children rights, education, etc.

1)Sanjana is the branch manager of ABC Handicrafts Pvt. The company’s objective is to promote the sales of Indian handloom and handicraft products. Its sells fabrics, furnishings, ready-mades and household items are made out of traditional Indian fabrics. Sanjana decides quantities, variety, colour and texture of all the above items and then allocates resources for their purchase form different suppliers. She appoints a team of designers and crafts people in the company, who developed some prints for bed covers in bright colour on silk. Although they looked very impressive, they were more expensive than they had planned to sell. Average customer could not afford to buy it. Praising their effort, Sanjana suggested that they should keep the silk bed covers for special occasions like Diwali and Christmas and offer the cotton bed covers on a regular basis to keep costs under control. Identify the functions of management which Sanjana performs by quoting the lines the above para.
3) Nishtha is the marketing manager of a company selling laptops. She plans the target sale of 2000 laptops per month. She allocates necessary resources to carry out the plan. She has six salesmen working under her. She works with them, guiding and motivating them to achieve the target sales. At the end of the month, after comparison of actual sales with the target sales she found that actual sales exceeded the target sales. She rewards the efficient employees to motivate them. 1. How does Nishtha prove the importance of management? Explain.2.. Also state any two values which she wants to communicate to the society by her behavior.
